#26a Events About 1968

As you may or may not know, AREA Chicago is working this fall as the "Project In Residence" at the Jane Addams Hull House Museum to develop our next issue on the theme of "1968/2008: The Inheritance of Politics and the Politics of Inheritance". We are hoping this issue will address hidden histories of 68 in Chicago, the legacy of that time and its influence today, and intergenerational dynamics in social movements. We will be developing programs throughout the fall, co-sponsoring other group's events, and working hard on the magazine, to be released in early December 09. Please mark your calendars now for our annual fundraiser on friday December 5th and a day of 1968/2008 related programs at the Hull House Museum on Saturday December 6th.

  • 08.15-17 - Exhibition about Chicago in 1968 OPENING THIS WEEKEND with Films in Hyde Park Every Sunday now through September.

The exhibition (@ DOVA Temporary, 5228 S. Harper Ave)features works by Barbara Jones-Hogu of AfriCOBRA, Bob Crawford, the Hairy Who, and the Chicago Women's Liberation Union Graphics Collective, as well as documentation and a curated soundscape of 1968. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday, August 16, 2-5pm. A People's Atlas of 1968. Come and participate in a group map-making session! Write/draw/paint your memories, associations, and imagination of the late 1960s on blank maps of the city of Chicago. Co-sponsored by AREA Chicago. Event is at DOVA Temporary, 5228 S. Harper Ave

Sunday, August 17, 8pm, DNC video screening at BACKSTORY CAFÉ, 6100 S. Blackstone Ave. Courtesy of the Chicago Film Archives, we will screen "Year of Confrontation," a program of shorts, on 16mm film, on the protests and police riot around the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
